As a lifelong wrestling fan, it has become blatantly obvious to me as well as the rest of you, I'm certain, that the product has become stale. Sadly, the reason for the recession is that the people in charge think that they know more about what the fans want then the fans themselves. That is an absurd statement to read or speak, but Vince has uttered that verbatim on several occasions. Combined with the fact that WWE has no competitive threat, we are forced to tune in every week to the same vanilla gimmicks, backstage soap opera vignettes, and predictable spot fests. We still tune in, because we are fans, but I think as a whole we don't like much of what we see.
This could be turned around in 6 months by bringing back managers, and creating some clear cut babyface/heel CHARACTERS that we could sink our teeth into. Nothing campy, not Duke the Dumpster Droese. Think Muhammad Hassan, or Mr. Perfect, characters who were proven winners. A sniveling, cowardly, dastardly cheat of a manager could really get the crowds booing/cheering again. So many of your posts talk about how dead the crowd is. Of course it is, there is nothing to buy into. This illustrates the ferocity of wrestling fans, because they still spend their hard earned dollars on a show that they know probably will not be that great. It's not great because nothing happens in the ring anymore. I want to see Dr. Death hit Ricky Morton with the football helmet, not Trish Stratus shining Vince McMahon's helmet. I was so excited when the original Nexus came out and destroyed everything, because for the first time in years, a wrestling angle was occurring right before my eyes. Michael Hayes at Smackdown does a little better job with this than Raw, but he has to please Vince too. He doesn't work unfiltered.
Characters are so important. WWE Champion: The Rock! Stone Cold Steve Austin! Macho Man Randy Savage! Sound good? Sure it does. Try this. WWE Champion: Michael McGillicuty. Mason Ryan. Alex Riley. Falls flat. That has nothing to do with the guys themselves, its just that the writers give them gimmicks that are doomed from the start, and Vince approves them. I understand that the company makes an insane amount of money, but I think that is because its a more accessible product than ever, not because it is a more riveting product than in the past. To be old is new again. I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for something new.
